A Slice Of Happy

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law."

Galatians 5:23

Who wouldn't want to feel love? Who wouldn't want to awaken each morning feeling joy instead of depression? Who wouldn't want to feel at peace, especially during difficult times? But what about Happy? Nowhere does the above Bible verse mention "Happiness."

One of my decades, labeled 20-something, was spent as a single female, earning my way, and choosing my day (and night) itinerary. I found my "Fun" which made me happy. When you go to Disneyland you are happy. When you leave Disneyland, you leave behind those happy moments. Yes, you have happy memories but that happiness has been put away into your mind's journal. To get it back, you need to return to the place and the actions that caused your happiness. "Happy" is a drug, ingested into our lives, filling us until our natural selves process it out and we return to reality. And we always return to reality.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of Happy, however, I realized, diving into age 30, that Happy was not, and is not, sustainable. Without giving, or receiving Love, the world pretty much sucks. Hope can be squashed if you cannot find Joy in small, everyday movements, tasks, and accomplishments. Your sleep becomes disturbed by difficult dreams, causing exhaustion during the day, sapping your Joy, and keeping you from the ability to Love. Happiness is not essential. Love, Joy, and Peace are essential to one's well-being. The rest of the list of do-gooder stuff in those verses is impossible when you don't have the first three listed: Love, Joy, Peace.

You may want to be good to others, but you must first be good to yourself. You don't have to worry about what makes you happy - that's a super easy problem to solve.

*Find who you love, and who loves you.

*Choose to be joyful when the squeezed lemon of life gets you in the eye.

*Be at peace, first with yourself, and then with your world.

Ahh, if it were only that easy...
